Project Reveal: Modern Cowboy in the M Streets

THE STORY

This M Streets home didn’t need a gut renovation. It needed an identity.

Our clients relocated from California to Dallas, Texas to be closer to the manufacturing arm of their hat company. They brought next to no furniture, a baby, a toddler, and a tight timeline.

The home had been recently built, in the legendary Dallas M’s street’s neighborhood. And it was well done. The architecture was clean and modern. No overhaul necessary.

(Bet you never thought we could do a project without moving a wall, right?!)

The opportunity? Infuse it with warmth, texture, and a refined Western edge that felt elevated, not themed.

Never themed.

Oh, and make it comfortable and durable for a small, growing family and chic enough for hosting international business associates.

No problem.

We didn’t move a single wall. Instead, we added strategic built-ins, layered in art with hyper-intention, and blended modern silhouettes with organic materials to create a home that feels collected, elevated, lightly western, and unmistakably theirs.

Modern Cowboy. But make it sophisticated.

THE BEFORE

The bones were strong. White walls, hardwood floors, clean lines.

But it felt a little bit…unfinished. No soul. No weight. No story.

Without furnishings and art, the home read flat. Our job was to bring depth, dimension, and personality without compromising what was already working.

THE PLAN

With no layout changes, the transformation relied on being strategic with style.

We focused on:

  • Built-ins to bring storage, function, and a little bit of drama

  • A tightly controlled color palette, inspired by the hues of the southwest

  • Strategic moments of moody color for contrast and some gravitas

  • A curated art collection that tells a Western story without becoming costume-y

Because the timeline was tight, we prioritized non-custom furnishings that could still read bespoke (nobody has to know). The design process began entirely over Zoom. Then we brought it all together on-site with layered installs that gave the home its final polish.

(A cowboy would say “spit and shine” but that sounds a little crass. We’ll go with polish.)

The result is proof that thoughtful furnishing can be just as transformative as sledgehammer wielding demolition.

THE AFTER

Let’s take a little tour.

DINING

Dark blue wall with six beige hats and gold sconces. Black console table below with two striped vases and a plant. Mood is stylish.

This is the first thing you see when you walk in, and boy, does it set the tone immediately.

The deep blue paneled wall came with the house, so we curated light colored hats from our homeowner’s business to pop against the dark backdrop. The 3D art gives weight and drama, styled like a curated gallery installation rather than memorabilia (or a hat rack).

Elegant dining room with wood table, chairs, and chandelier. Navy wall displays hats. Art on wall, plants on sideboard, serene mood.

The console below keeps the lines clean and modern, allowing the hats to be the focal point.

Modern dining room with wood table, beige chairs, wine bottle, and glasses. Plant and art on white wall, pendant lights hang above.

The dining table was an exercise in restraint. Rather than decking out the chairs with cowhide or a southwestern pattern (thought about it, held back), we opted for a neutral linen texture to keep things modern and clean.

The textured neutral rug brings in the accent wall color and grounds the seating.

LIVING ROOM

Modern living room with a brown armchair, beige sofa, and wooden table. Art on walls and green plants create a cozy, inviting atmosphere.

We changed exactly zero of the bones in this room. This transformation is all about the furnishings. The thoughtful layering completely shifted the aesthetic.

An original, hand-painted desert landscape anchors the room above the mantel (JK it’s a TV!), pulling in sand, sage, and sunbaked clay tones.

Leather seating adds warmth and sculptural presence without feeling too rustic. This is a modern home, not the 6666 ranch, so we wanted to keep things modern but still comfortable and livable for a family.

Stylish living room with beige sofa, wooden furniture, plants, and colorful art. Books and a black hat on the table. Cozy and inviting.

The wood console behind the sofa - probably my favorite piece in the house - introduces weight and texture, balancing the light upholstery. It’s the perfect marriage of modern and rustic and has a found object energy that keeps the room from feeling too polished.

Cowboy portraiture appears again, but in a refined, art-forward way that feels curated rather than literal.

Cozy living room with beige sofa, colorful cushions, and a fireplace. Decor includes plant, abstract paintings, and books on a coffee table.

Layered textiles, organic greenery, and subtle brass accents add depth without overwhelming the modern architecture.

BREAKFAST ROOM

Modern dining area with leather chairs, a light-wood table, and a colorful striped painting. A large plant and fruit bowl are on the table.

Before, the staged furniture had a floating breakfast table, which just felt tiiiiiiiny in this large area. It was screaming for a cozy banquette. This custom built piece made to match the kitchen cabinetry anchors this corner and instantly makes it feel tailored.

A faux leather seat adds durability for young kids while still reading rich and warm.

The sculptural light fixture above keeps the space modern and slightly playful.

Abstract art and woven leather details bring the desert-inspired vibe in a way that feels contemporary rather than thematic.

It’s casual family dining, elevated. Texas Roadhouse Chic.

POWDER ROOM

Bathroom with green tile, black "HOWDY" sign, cowboy art, white sconce, dark marble counter, and a potted plant, creating a rustic vibe.

This space is small but unapologetic.

The bronco artwork is the very first thing we picked out, and was on the cover page of our first design presentation (hope you like it!) and became the design spark for the room. Bold but controlled.

My favorite detail though – the matchstick wallpaper adds texture and a subtle Western nod (no cowboy worth his weight would travel without matches) without leaning cliché.

And yes, the “Howdy” moment makes you smile without turning it into a theme park. You’re allowed one “word” art in a house, and this was the moment.

If you can’t have a little fun in a powder bath, where can you?

FLEX ROOM: MEDIA + WORKOUT

Stylish home gym with a treadmill, yoga mat, and weights. Blue walls, wooden shelves, TV, plants, and a large mirror create a cozy ambiance.

This room had to do double duty (a client recently called a room like this a Room of Requirement; Harry Potter fans rejoice), and do it beautifully.

It needed to function as the family lounge and binge room, but also a workout room. Without looking like you threw a treadmill in a living room, or a sofa in a Planet Fitness.

Moody blue walls create depth and immediately elevate what could have felt like a typical white-box gym space (and keep the black workout equipment from being the single dark eyesore in the room).

Cozy living room with a brown sofa, colorful cushions, and a rustic wood table on a striped rug. Navy walls and natural light create a calm mood.

The custom built-ins are the real hero, though. Not only are they providing much needed storage, the warm wood is literally uniting both sides of this room to help it feel like it’s unified, and not it’s having an identity crisis.

A modern home gym with a black treadmill facing a wall mirror. Wooden shelves hold vases; dumbbells and a yoga ball rest on the floor.

The mirrored wood wall reflects light and adds dimension without reading overly athletic. And, it’s backlit. Because DRAMA.

Functional? Yes. But also composed and cohesive.

MASTER BEDROOM

Cozy bedroom with beige bedding, red throw, blue pillows, and abstract wall art. Warm light filters in, creating a serene atmosphere.

Here, we softened the palette (a calm oasis in the desert, shall we!?) but kept the Western thread alive.

Desert landscape art introduces warm clay and blue tones against the neutral walls.

Cozy bedroom with a bed and daybed, decorated pillows, and boots. A landscape painting and tall plant adorn a serene, neutral space.

Layered linens in neutral tones and textured rugs add warmth without heaviness. A few bold pops of color for interest and pattern. The perfect place to kick off your boots at the end of a long day.

Cozy bedroom with a wooden nightstand, unique lamp, large mirror, and plant. Brown boots on the floor, warm tones with red accents.

One nightstand was centered under a window. And the other was under…nothing. We couldn’t abide with that level of asymmetry, so we added an organic shaped mirror in the same size and scale as the window to even things out. The organic modern tree also adds lightness and movement to all the straight lines.

HALLWAY MOMENT

Wooden sideboard with decor: vase, open book, sculpture. Painting of a person on horse in blue landscape. Bright, calm room.

If there’s a parent that wouldn’t KILL to have a built in just outside of all the kids’ rooms, I haven’t met them. But it could easily become a clutter trap.

This hallway moment could have been overlooked as just a collect all disaster zone. Instead, it became a feature.

The cowboy portrait above this incredible built in adds color to an otherwise neutral hallway. Select curated items on the top help (hopefully) encourage this area to not become a stuffed animal holding ground.

It’s a quiet but intentional design move that keeps the look consistent throughout the home.

GUEST ROOM

Cozy bedroom with a plaid bed, colorful art, and plants. A large window shows a bright outdoor scene, creating a warm, inviting mood.

Hello, Texas! If out of town guests want to experience life in the Lone Star State, and this is it. Where the Master was a neutral oasis, this is an explosion of desert color in the best way.

The art sets the palette, and the textiles carry it through. The end of bed bench is handy for guests and also adds some neutral, grounding texture so the color doesn’t overwhelm.

Stylish room with a brown chair, orange cushion, and potted plant on a side table. Framed woven art and dresser in the background.

This leather chair is the single piece of furniture they brought from California for all the rooms we designed.

So we found a home for him, styled around it, and grounded it with layered textiles and desert-inspired art.

It now feels integrated instead of accidental.

PLAYROOM (and future Whiskey Lounge)

Cozy playroom with gray walls, small round table, two chairs, plush sheep toy, and art on the wall. Soft lighting and neutral tones.

Painted in a deep, saturated gray, this space leans moody (and hides crayons and scuff marks).

Custom built-ins house toys and books now, but were designed to evolve over time. Once life is a little bit less Bluey and more Bourbon, the millwork is designed to support a future whiskey lounge moment, should the need arise.

Handmade kids art displayed on the walls and a friendly sheep keep things whimsical and not too grown up.

It’s playful, but it’s still sophisticated. Which is great, seeing as it’s right off the front door and across from the dining room where we began our tour!

If this project speaks to you, it may not be because you want a Cowboy house. It may be because you want a home with an identity.

If you're in the M Streets, in the Lone Star State, or anywhere beyond, and you're ready for a space that feels layered, intentional, and unmistakably yours, we’d love to design it with you. Let’s build something amazing.
